Now is ripe to change Man Utd's formation - Ruben Amorim states.

Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes was among multiple senior players absent from the Boxing Day win against Newcastle United.

Manager Ruben Amorim argues that switching Manchester United's formation due to public noise would have been "the end" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle United, Amorim moved away from his trademark three-at-the-back setup with wide defenders and opted to deploy an traditional four-man defense with two holding midfielders.

Amorim acknowledged this at times became a back six in the latter minutes as his side dug in for a win - securing only their second shutout of the campaign.

While he once notably stated that not even the highest authority could force him to change his approach, Amorim insists the option to utilize different formations has remained part of his strategy.

However, he stresses he could only alter the tactics when his team were performing well enough - lest it would seem as if he was succumbing to external criticism.

"When I came here last season, I understood perhaps I didn't possess the personnel to excel in that system, but it was the beginning of a process," he commented.

"The goal was to build an philosophy. Today is a different time. We lack a lot of players, and we need adapt, so they comprehend the reason we are switching things up.

"It is not because of the demands of the media, or the fans.

"When the press criticize altering the system repeatedly, I cannot make a change because the players will think I'm changing because of external voices and I feel that is the end for the manager.

"Once we are getting results in our preferred setup, that is the moment to evolve.

"We will become a stronger side because when our full complement of personnel are back, we are not planning to use three defenders all the time."

Squad Challenges Continue

With only two victories in their last eight outings before beating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is right to say his team have been playing well.

He is, however, working with a severely stretched squad, with multiple first-team stars already ruled out for the upcoming fixture against struggling Wolves.

That number will grow if playmaker Mason Mount is unable to shake off the injury that forced his exit from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will miss the Wolves match, even though he is reportedly pushing his manager to allow him to return following his hamstring injury.

"Bruno is already saying he needs to practice," revealed Amorim. "However there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. No chance. That's definitive."

Fernandes' Leadership Endures

However, the 31-year-old will probably continue to be deeply engaged, as while most injured players view matches from a private box, Fernandes was seen keeping a close eye on the warm-ups from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim expects his leader to carry on offering insight.

"The guy is a natural leader," he declared. "He must not be that guy that when he is not playing, he's not talking and offering advice. He's constantly vocal. That is the reason he's the captain.

"There are bad things sometimes - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a lot of good things. Even after he finishes treatment, he goes to watch the rest of the squad practicing. There are a lot of things you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he wants my job or not, but he's a born leader. He is a true captain."

Recovery Schedule for Injured Personnel

While the specific date for the captain's comeback - and that of fellow injured players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unknown, by the end of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from continental duty.
