Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise
New research reveals that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such medications should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
