Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted just one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.
