Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
